What really helps to avoid crashes is dividing the high-poly model (mostly the w_models, but the v_models are better to be optimised, too) into several SMDs instead of just one. I did that to all the models I am using, but kept the original 2K textures, and I am playing custom campaigns without issues. A good example: an HQ G3 that previously was making my game crash when someone with that weapon gets killed by the Witch or pounced by the Hunter. After the model got divided into several parts, no more crashes. The only problem with that is not all weapon mods are that easy to optimise: broken animations/meshes after re-compiling are not a rare occasion. Low-end PC owners probably still can crash while playing with weapon mods with high-res textures. A friend of mine was playing on a potato PC, and they had to remove all the high-res mods because the game was quite unstable. Sometimes. But in general, reducing the texture resolution does not necessarily help against crashes if the model has a hell ton of vertices and is not divided into several parts.

if you like this, check out another two of my recently updated particle mods Deployable Tree and Funky FX This is another particle experiment of mine, this time modifying blood_fx.pcf It's a bit half arsed and not as refined as my other recent particle mods, but I'm putting it out just to see if anyone likes it. The primary intention was adding floating xp points like "+10" on certain blood/wound impacts. inspired by old arcade games and that killing floor server plugin if you know. Of course due to that it's tied to wound impacts, there are misfires / bugs, and I didn't actually fine-tune it yet as far as when and how they appear, the only more or less stable effect is "+10" on 80-90% of headshots. Seconary addition in this mod is the "speech bubble" style captions that appear above incapacitated survivors. I didn't know what to put there so just went with some lines that came up. disclaimer: YES, of course it WILL conflict with any blood_fx mod like green alien blood etc. if you like this, check out another two of my recently updated particle mods Deployable Tree and Funky FX

"What the hell is that?" "It's a goddamn Bloater!" "Bill, that's clearly the Charger from the hit game Left 4 Dead 2" "Joel, shut the f%ck up!" This is my second Cordyceps infected mod. Ever since I discovered that Bloater model, I knew I had to use all that fungal armor and put it on some other infected, it didn't really fit the Smoker, so I saved it up for the Charger. I'll be blunt: this model sucks. Or, rather, the skeleton of the default Charger model. I've realized that the Charger model has a wacky skeleton that makes it difficult to edit the mesh, so that it moves correctly(plus some animations are literally the smoker's). No wonder, since L4D2 was rushed. I did the best I could trying to exclude any clippings but it ain't perfect. The armor on certain animations might look kinda funky. Hopefully, I never have to touch the charger mdl ever again. Everyone's been asking me to make the rest of the infected, but honestly, I'm out of ideas at this point. I've wanted to make the Charger and the Smoker from the very beginning. For now, I wanna do something else. I really like how the part of the skull turned out. I knew my Slightly Redesigned Charger texture would come into use. Some parts of the textures were borrowed from Citizen's Bulldozer Charger skin, especially the clothes.
