Firing the .30-06 cartridge and using a modern stripper clip, the Springfield 1903 went on to become the service rifle for most units of the US Armed forces from it's inception in 1903 up to the Vietnam war, being complemented by the M1 Garand during WW2 and the Korean war, and ultimately replaced by the M14.
