WorldEdit 7.4.4 is out — a new update for one of the most widely used building tools in the Minecraft server world. WorldEdit is an in-game map editor: select, copy, fill, replace — entire building projects that would take hours by hand are done in seconds. Which is exactly why you should apply updates to this tool deliberately: software that changes worlds at scale deserves a clean update process.
What's new in WorldEdit 7.4.4?
The version number places this build as a patch within the 7.4 series — a maintenance update, not a major jump. Which fixes and adjustments it contains exactly is listed on the official release page on Modrinth: WorldEdit 7.4.4 changelog. The same page also states authoritatively which Minecraft versions and platforms the build supports — for you as an operator, that is the most relevant piece of information on the release page.
Compatibility: plugin or mod — it just has to match
WorldEdit ships in two flavours: as a plugin for Bukkit-based servers (Spigot, Paper) and as a mod for mod loaders such as Fabric or NeoForge. So before updating, check two things:
- Platform: download exactly the variant that matches your server. A Fabric build does not belong in the
pluginsfolder of a Paper server. - Minecraft version: the build must support your server version — the list is on the Modrinth release page.
Nothing fundamental changes for Bedrock players joining via Geyser: WorldEdit runs entirely server-side, nobody needs a client installation.
Applying the update at game-serverhosting
You don't update WorldEdit via the version switch (that changes the server version) but via the file manager:
- Create a backup — in the panel under "Backups". Doubly sensible with a world editor.
- Stop the server so no files are in use.
- Replace the old file: in the file manager, delete the previous WorldEdit JAR in
plugins/(Paper/Spigot) ormods/(Fabric/NeoForge) and upload the 7.4.4 file. - Start the server and check the log to confirm WorldEdit loads cleanly.
- Verify the version: in-game with
//version— it should report 7.4.4.

FAQ
Is //undo a substitute for backups?
No. //undo only affects your own editing session and is gone after a restart. Before large edits — and before any update — backups remain mandatory.
Does the server have to be offline while swapping the file? Yes, stop it briefly. Replacing JAR files on a running server leads to unpredictable behaviour.
I use FastAsyncWorldEdit (FAWE) — does this update affect me? No. FAWE is an independent project with its own release cycle. Never install WorldEdit and FAWE side by side.
Do my schematics survive the update?
Your .schem files live in the file system independently of the plugin and remain untouched by the update.
Can Bedrock players via Geyser use WorldEdit? In principle yes — the commands run server-side through chat. Individual convenience features like the wand tool may feel different through Geyser than on a Java client.
Which WorldEdit version do I need for my Minecraft version? The release page on Modrinth answers that authoritatively: every build lists its supported game versions and platforms.
