NeoForge has published a fresh beta build: 26.2.0.8-beta. The build belongs to the loader's 26.2 series and therefore targets servers meant to run Minecraft 26.2. As a server owner, the individual changes inside the build matter less than what the beta status means for your server — and how to apply the update cleanly.

What's new in NeoForge 26.2.0.8-beta?

For context: NeoForge is a mod loader for Minecraft: Java Edition that originated as an independent fork of the Forge project. The loader is the foundation server-side mods run on in the first place.

The version scheme tells you the essentials: the first two segments match the Minecraft version. 26.2.0.8-beta is therefore a build for Minecraft 26.2, and the -beta suffix marks it as experimental — work on this loader generation is not finished yet, and interfaces may still change between builds. The NeoForge team documents the exact changes in the official changelog at neoforged.net. We deliberately do not copy the entries here: for your update decision, the beta status matters more than any single line.

Should a beta run on a production server?

Our recommendation: only with a good reason. A beta is great for testing new Minecraft 26.2 features with your community or checking mod compatibility early — ideally on a secondary or test server. Your main server with an established world and active player base is better off staying on a stable release series until NeoForge 26.2 leaves beta. The main reason is the mod ecosystem: many mod developers only follow once the loader is stable. Switch early and you play with a reduced mod selection.

Compatibility: mods, plugins, Geyser

Three things to check before updating:

  • Mods must match exactly: a mod is built for one loader and one Minecraft version. Your existing mods for older series will not run on 26.2 — check every mod for an available 26.2 build.
  • NeoForge is not Paper/Spigot: plugins (e.g. for Paper) do not run on NeoForge — and vice versa. If your setup is plugin-based, this update is not relevant for you.
  • Geyser/Floodgate: for Bedrock crossplay, Geyser must also be available in a mod variant matching your loader version. Especially with beta builds it pays to check first — otherwise Bedrock players stay locked out.

How to update your server at game-serverhosting

  1. Create a backup: one click in the panel under "Backups" — your safety net in case anything goes wrong.
  2. Switch the version: open the version switch in the panel, pick NeoForge as the loader and 26.2.0.8-beta as the build. You will find the step-by-step walkthrough in our guide on changing your Minecraft server version. The panel sets the matching Java version automatically.
  3. Update your mods: replace all installed mods with 26.2 builds — remove the old versions first.
  4. Start and check the log: watch the first startup for errors; an incompatible mod is the most common cause.
  5. Roll back if in doubt: if something misbehaves, simply restore the backup from step 1.

FAQ

Will I lose my world when updating? No, world data is preserved. Still: backup first — a world loaded once under 26.2 cannot be taken back to older versions.

Will my current mods keep working? Only if the developer offers a build for NeoForge 26.2. Without a matching build, the server won't start or the mod will be missing.

Can I switch back after testing? Yes — via the backup. The version switch alone is not enough, because the world has already been converted.

How do NeoForge and Forge differ? Both are mod loaders; NeoForge is a fork of Forge with its own ecosystem. Mods are built per loader and are not interchangeable.

When will the stable 26.2 release arrive? The project does not announce dates. Follow the changelog and announcements at neoforged.net.
