Better Sorting

Better Sorting overhauls Project Zomboid's item categories from the ground up, giving items clearer names and sorting them into reworked categories so inventories don't turn into chaos on busy servers. It ships with built-in recognition for over 200 other workshop mods, so their items get sorted correctly too — genuinely useful on mod-heavy servers running lots of item packs. It's compatible with both Build 40 and Build 41, including multiplayer on either version, and can be added to or removed from an existing save at any point without breaking it. For your server config, adding Workshop ID 2313387159 and Mod ID BetterSortCC to WorkshopItems=/Mods= is enough — connecting clients download the translated interface automatically.

Tip: With many item mods active, check the mod's Git wiki list first to confirm compatibility for specific packs.

Plan the rollout and operation

Better Sorting works well with large item collections because it improves organization without storing new items. Still check important content packs, containers, and translations so no category becomes unclear or empty. Add it to a world copy first and inspect vehicles, storage, and character inventories. Since removal is described as save-safe, it is a good candidate for a limited community trial.

Before changes, back up the save, sandbox configuration, and server INI, and record the Workshop ID, mod ID, game branch, and order. Both lists must contain the same projects in dependency order; a Workshop download alone does not enable the mod. Start a world copy, connect at least two clients, and test the core feature, persistence, death or reconnecting, and a full restart. Review console.txt and the server log for missing files or Lua errors. After Workshop updates, update dependencies together and retain the last working combination. Before removal, clean up additional items, vehicles, clothing, or slots on a copy. When moving between Build 41 and 42, verify every mod individually; a similar name is not proof of compatibility. This protects the live save from incomplete downloads and branch conflicts.
