Different systems fail for different reasons. A vehicle can have perfect engine condition but badly worn piston rings. Healthy coolant but a failing Water Pump. A full brake reservoir with air trapped in the lines. Good compression overall with one or two weak cylinders. The goal is to make maintaining a vehicle feel like actually owning a machine, not repairing one condition bar. 🔍 MECHANICS SKILL ACTUALLY MATTERS The mod does not hand you every exact number up front. An inexperienced survivor might only notice "something doesn't seem right." A more experienced mechanic starts identifying exact fluid levels and condition, failed components, leak severity and likely sources, cooling, brake and ignition faults, weak cylinders, and the mechanical causes behind poor engine health. Your Mechanics skill changes what your character actually understands about the vehicle. 🧪 PER-CYLINDER COMPRESSION TESTING On supported vehicles, compression is derived from real mechanical faults — Piston Ring wear, Head Gasket failure and overheat damage — rather than one engine-wide percentage. Mechanics 0–2 — general impressions only, no cylinder diagnosis and no PSI. Mechanics 3–6 — identify weak cylinders and uneven compression, exact PSI hidden. Mechanics 7+ — read individual cylinder PSI and reach stronger conclusions. Vehicles with no known cylinder layout fall back to an engine-wide report rather than inventing information. 📟 VDA-93 DIAGNOSTIC READER The VDA-93 Vehicle Diagnostic Analyzer gives skilled survivors another way to read the car: - CODES — current detected faults - STORED — previously recorded problems - LIVE DATA — live vehicle and engine information It does not replace Mechanics skill. Low-skill characters get limited information; experienced mechanics understand increasingly specific faults. It can also be used from the driver's seat for supported scans. 🛑 BRAKES, COOLING & LUBRICATION Brakes are their own hydraulic system: fluid level and condition, trapped air, leaks, Master Cylinder condition, bleeding, draining and refilling, inspections and driving warnings. Neglected brakes don't just add a warning row — brake condition affects how well the vehicle actually stops. Cooling models leaks, pressure, hoses that degrade and burst, Head Gasket problems and overheating. Pressure testing helps a skilled mechanic find where the system is losing pressure. Lubrication models oil level and condition, viscosity grades, Conventional / Synthetic Blend / Full Synthetic, wrong-viscosity penalties, oil mixing, filter clogging, oil pressure and contamination. Using the wrong oil may not immediately kill the engine. But over time, the engine remembers how you treated it. ⚡ DRIVE BELT & ELECTRICAL Battery condition and charge, Starter, Alternator, and full charging and starting diagnosis. The Drive Belt is a real service component that can wear, squeal, slip and snap. Removed belts retain their actual mechanical state. Taking a snapped belt off and reinstalling it does not magically repair it. 🔩 SALVAGE & RECOVERY Recover usable Engine Oil, Coolant and Power Steering Fluid. Recovered fluid keeps its condition rather than becoming new again, and mixing blends condition honestly. Components can also be pulled from donor vehicles and reused, keeping their real condition and fault state. A wreck in the parking lot might never drive again, but its Radiator, Starter, Alternator or Water Pump might keep yours alive. 📋 SERVICE WINDOW & HISTORY Inspect and service through a dedicated Service Window with tabs for Overview, Lubrication, Cooling, Electrical, HVAC, Tune-Up, Fuel System, Brakes and Service History. Major maintenance is recorded on the vehicle itself, so Service History survives saving and reloading, other players working on it, and the vehicle changing owners. 🌍 TRANSLATION SUPPORT Under the Hood includes a complete Build 42 translation framework covering the Service Window, diagnostics, scanner, items, fluids, menus, reports, warnings and Service History. Community translators can add languages through media/lua/shared/Translate/. The included English files are the template, and missing entries safely fall back to English. Aren't wrist watches (e.g. non-digital watches) in PZ kinda useless? Digital watches currently outclass wrist watches by a large margin: they provide the time, temperature, and date all at once, they can be scrapped for scrap electronics and electrical xp, and it's not like they run on batteries or whatever. Meanwhile wrist watches only tell the time, and can't be use for anything other than that. But why settle? If those wrist watches are completely useless, why not scrap them? Now you can scrap them into either: - Scrap metal, a useful item for doing anything related to metalworking, and also more realistic - Scrap electronics, useful for crafting electrical items and repairing generators These two options are given as separate submods (each containing one of the recipes), and I recommend only picking the one you like/need more, however there isn't any issues with running both at once, if you like the option (note that the context menu item will be duplicated, but hovering over them will reveal which scrap material they'll give) Note about XP gains The scrap electronics recipe will provide the same amount fo electrical XP as dismantling a digital watch, to help players grind electrical faster. Currently the scrap metal recipe provides no XP, since it is meant to be more realistic and gaining metalworking XP when you don't touch a propane torch at all seems a little odd.
