Before your first session together

Agree on a build

Server and players need matching builds. Build 41 and Build 42 use separate save games; back up your world before switching.

Coordinate Workshop mods

Check build compatibility and dependencies. Workshop IDs and internal mod IDs are different; the selection must match on server and clients.

Create backups deliberately

Make a panel backup before updates and changes. Game-generated backups and their rotation are an additional mechanism; do not rely on them alone.

Your world determines RAM needs

Mods, explored map areas and active players affect memory usage. These cards are starting suggestions, not guaranteed player limits.

Keeping a Build 41 world

The Indie Stone identifies the legacy41 Steam branch for groups staying on Build 41. All players and the target server need matching builds; check the available server version before migrating.

A backup does not make a save compatible

Build 41 saves are not compatible with Build 42. The developer also announced incompatible saves when moving from Unstable 42.19 to 42.20. Keep your original world and decide whether you want a fresh start before changing builds.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Project Zomboid server cost?
A Project Zomboid server costs from €7.59 per month with us (from 4 GB RAM), up to €29.43 for the largest tier. The configurator shows the exact monthly price before you pay; the subscription can be cancelled monthly. Examples: 4 GB RAM with 24 GB NVMe for €7.59; 6 GB RAM with 32 GB NVMe for €11.23; 12 GB RAM with 60 GB NVMe for €22.15.
Can I rent a Project Zomboid server for free?
There is no free Project Zomboid server at game-serverhosting: every server runs on fixed, booked resources. The entry tier costs €7.59 per month with no minimum term, and automatic renewal can be switched off.
How difficult is Project Zomboid for beginners?
Project Zomboid is one of the most challenging survival games — death is permanent. For beginners we recommend Sandbox mode with zombie population set to "Low", sleep disabled, and increased starting gear. This lets you learn the mechanics without dying too frustratingly.
How many players can join?
Technically Project Zomboid allows up to 100 players, but from 32 onwards the game itself warns about desync and map-streaming problems in Build 42. Our configurator estimates around 8 players for 4 GB RAM, 12 for 6 GB and 32 from 16 GB. With many mods such as Hydrocraft or Brita, plan for an extra 2 GB.
Are Steam Workshop mods supported?
Yes, Steam Workshop mods are fully supported. Enter the Workshop IDs in the server config — the server downloads them automatically. Players must have the same mods subscribed, otherwise they will be rejected on connect.
Can I freely configure sandbox mode?
Yes, all sandbox settings are configurable via `SandboxVars.lua` in the dashboard: zombie speed, spawn rates, loot frequency, seasons, electricity duration, water shutdown, and over 100 more parameters. You can save and switch between multiple presets.
What happens to my world when I pause the server?
The world is fully preserved — Project Zomboid saves the entire world state including zombie positions, player bases, and loot to disk. After a restart the server loads the world exactly from the last save point.
Does the server support the stable Build 42 release?
Yes. Build 42.20 entered the public stable branch in July 2026 and is supported as a stable version. Create a backup and verify Workshop-mod compatibility before switching versions or beta branches.
Do I get my own subdomain?
Yes. Every server includes a subdomain like my-server.gs.game-serverhosting.com, and you can change it anytime in the dashboard.
What are the free extras?
For every server you enable Uptime Kuma (server monitoring) and Game Server Watcher (server status in Discord/Telegram) with one click in the dashboard at no extra cost, plus one bot such as Sinusbot (music bot for Discord/TeamSpeak). Every additional bot costs extra.
How quickly is my server online?
Typical initial setup: about 7 minutes. Queues or large installations can take longer. Setup creates the subdomain and DNS records automatically, and for Minecraft also accepts the EULA and installs Geyser.
Is there a minimum contract term?
There is no long-term minimum. Billing is a monthly subscription and automatic renewal can be disabled. Longer terms may qualify for discounts.
Are the servers located in Germany?
You choose the location at checkout: Germany (Falkenstein and Limburg) or France (Roubaix) — all in the EU, connected to the major European exchanges. Low pings for players across Germany, Austria and Switzerland at both locations, and solid latency for the rest of Europe.
Which provider is best for my server?
The best provider is the one that shows you what you get before you pay: RAM, slots, location, price and cancellation terms. Here the price and resources are visible in the configurator before checkout, there is no minimum term and setup is automated — feel free to compare that with other offers. Project Zomboid starts here at 7.59 EUR per month, and setup typically takes about 7 minutes.
Should I host the server myself or rent one?
Self-hosting costs power, time and a machine that runs around the clock; port forwarding, updates and backups are on you. A rented server is online within minutes, keeps running when your PC is off, and updates and backups are included; data-center DDoS protection is included at every location. For one or two friends on a single evening self-hosting is often fine — for a persistent world, renting pays off.
Can I increase or decrease the RAM later?
Yes, you can do it yourself in the customer area using a slider. An upgrade takes effect immediately: you only pay the prorated difference for the remaining term, and the new price applies from the next renewal. A downgrade takes effect on the next renewal date. Your world, settings and subdomain are kept, and depending on the game, a restart is required afterwards. With monthly payment and a minimum term, the change is only possible once that term has ended, and for games with a slot-based plan it is not available.
