Frequently asked questions

How difficult is Project Zomboid for beginners?
Project Zomboid is one of the most challenging survival games — death is permanent. For beginners we recommend Sandbox mode with zombie population set to "Low", sleep disabled, and increased starting gear. This lets you learn the mechanics without dying too frustratingly.
How many players can join?
Technically Project Zomboid allows up to 100 players, but from 32 upwards the game itself warns about desync and map streaming issues (Build 42). We recommend 6 GB RAM for up to 10 players, 8 GB for up to 20 and 16 GB for 32 players. With many mods (Hydrocraft, Brita etc.) add an extra 2 GB.
Are Steam Workshop mods supported?
Yes, Steam Workshop mods are fully supported. Enter the Workshop IDs in the server config — the server downloads them automatically. Players must have the same mods subscribed, otherwise they will be rejected on connect.
Can I freely configure sandbox mode?
Yes, all sandbox settings are configurable via `SandboxVars.lua` in the dashboard: zombie speed, spawn rates, loot frequency, seasons, electricity duration, water shutdown, and over 100 more parameters. You can save and switch between multiple presets.
What happens to my world when I pause the server?
The world is fully preserved — Project Zomboid saves the entire world state including zombie positions, player bases, and loot to disk. After a restart the server loads the world exactly from the last save point.
Does the server support the stable Build 42 release?
Yes. Build 42.20 entered the public stable branch in July 2026 and is supported as a stable version. Create a backup and verify Workshop-mod compatibility before switching versions or beta branches.
Do I get my own subdomain?
Yes. Every server includes a subdomain like my-server.game-serverhosting.com, and you can change it anytime in the dashboard.
What are the free extras?
Every server can enable free add-ons such as Uptime Kuma, Sinusbot, Game Server Watcher, and more with one click in the dashboard.
How quickly is my server online?
Typical initial setup: about 4 minutes. Queues or large installations can take longer.
Is there a minimum contract term?
There is no long-term minimum. Billing is a monthly subscription and automatic renewal can be disabled. Longer terms may qualify for discounts.
Are the servers located in Germany?
Yes. All game servers run in German data centres (Falkenstein and Limburg) connected to the major German exchanges — low pings for players across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and solid latency for the rest of Europe.
Which provider is best for my server?
The best provider is the one that shows you what you get before you pay: RAM, slots, location, price and cancellation terms. Here the price and resources are visible in the configurator before checkout, there is no minimum term and setup is automated — feel free to compare that with other offers.
Should I host the server myself or rent one?
Self-hosting costs power, time and a machine that runs around the clock; port forwarding, updates and backups are on you. A rented server is online within minutes, keeps running when your PC is off, and updates, DDoS protection and backups are included. For one or two friends on a single evening self-hosting is often fine — for a persistent world, renting pays off.
