Memory is the single biggest lever for your Minecraft server's performance — too little RAM means lag, slow chunk loading and, in the worst case, crashes in the middle of a session. How much you actually need depends on three factors: how many players are online at once, which server software you run (Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge or a full modpack), and how many plugins or mods you have installed. What happens if you run out of RAM? (Out of Memory)
When a Minecraft server needs more memory than it has available, the Java VM can crash with an Out-of-Memory (OOM) error — sometimes at the worst possible moment, with lots of players online or a big redstone contraption running. A crash like that is more than just annoying: if the world couldn't save cleanly at that moment, you risk losing chunk data or player progress. That's exactly why game-serverhosting automatically reserves extra container memory above your Java heap (see "Why exactly this number?" above) — it significantly reduces the OOM risk, but it doesn't replace getting the sizing right in the first place. Why do Paper and Spigot need less RAM than Forge or modpacks?
Paper and Spigot are heavily optimized, Bukkit-based server software that handle many of Minecraft's standard processes far more efficiently than vanilla — that saves a noticeable amount of memory, especially with more players online. Fabric and Forge, on the other hand, load additional mod code that brings its own data structures, extra entities and often entirely new gameplay mechanics — every mod you add increases the memory footprint a bit further. A full modpack often bundles anywhere from 50 to 300 mods at once, which is why modpack servers typically need noticeably more RAM than a comparable Paper server running a handful of plugins. That's why our recommendation factors in not just player count, but also your software choice and how many plugins or mods you're running.
