If joining shows “Incompatible client”, “Please use 1.21.1” or a missing-mods message, the server is usually fine. In most cases the wrong Minecraft profile was launched: the regular “Latest Release” profile contains neither the required modpack nor its loader.
Four facts must match for a modpack: modpack name, client version, Minecraft version and loader. Your server panel shows all four in the Connection section. Follow those facts instead of choosing the newest vanilla release.
What you need
- A paid Minecraft Java account.
- The launcher named on the connection card: CurseForge or Modrinth.
- The exact client version shown there.
- The server address from your panel.
You normally do not install the loader build manually. CurseForge or Modrinth configures Forge, NeoForge, Fabric or Quilt inside the pack profile.
Join with CurseForge
- Install the CurseForge app.
- In your server panel, open Connection and click “Open modpack in CurseForge”.
- Check the client version shown on the connection card. Large packs may have several releases for the same Minecraft version but with different mods.
- Install that exact release in CurseForge.
- Launch Minecraft with the Play button of that modpack profile. Do not launch the regular “Latest Release” profile in parallel.
- Open Multiplayer → Add Server, copy the address from your panel and join.
Join with Modrinth
- Install the Modrinth App.
- Open the linked modpack version from your connection card.
- Install it in the app and verify that its version and Minecraft version match the panel.
- Launch the generated modpack profile, open Multiplayer and add the server address.
Join with Prism Launcher
Prism Launcher is a lightweight, open-source launcher. It installs packs from both sources and keeps each instance on its own Java and memory settings.
- Install Prism Launcher and sign in once with your Microsoft account.
- Click Add Instance and pick CurseForge or Modrinth in the left column.
- Search for the modpack and select exactly the client version shown in your panel.
- Launch the created instance, open Multiplayer and add the server address.
For CurseForge packs use the built-in search rather than a manually downloaded archive: Prism then resolves the mods through the official API. If you want the mods folder kept in sync continuously, your server panel also offers a Packwiz URL under Plugins → Sync client mods, which Prism evaluates on every launch.
Invite friends correctly
Do not send only the server address. Your friends also need the modpack name, exact client version and launcher link shown in your panel. Every player must use the same pack profile. Extra client mods can also block joining when they change network or content data.
Exception: server-side-only packs
Some optimization packs install server-side mods only. The panel explicitly marks those packs as not requiring a client pack. In that case the listed Minecraft version in the regular Java client is enough. Without that notice, assume every player needs the complete pack.
“Incompatible client – please use 1.21.1”
This means your running client uses a different Minecraft protocol version. Close Minecraft completely and launch the modpack profile listed as, for example, Minecraft 1.21.1 in the panel. Merely changing the vanilla version is not enough: without the mods and correct loader the client remains incompatible.
Missing or mismatched mods
The server and client are not on the same pack release. Open the launcher's profile version settings and install exactly the version shown in the panel. Temporarily disable mods you added yourself. After a server modpack update, every player must move to the new release as well.
Right name, wrong pack
Many modpack series publish several editions under nearly identical names. Searching for “All the Mods 10” lists, among others:
- All the Mods 10 – ATM10 – the regular edition
- All the Mods 10: To the Sky – ATM10SKY – the skyblock edition with its own mods
- plus the neighbouring series ATM9 and ATM11, each with a “To the Sky” edition of its own
These packs are not interchangeable. The skyblock editions ship extra mods such as Ex Deorum or Translocators that the regular edition does not contain.
How to recognise this exact case: the message lists channels that are missing on the server side but required on the client — your client carries mods the server does not know at all. A plain version mismatch works the other way round: the server reports a different Minecraft version while the mod lists themselves match.
How to avoid it: always open the pack through the button on your connection card instead of searching for it in the launcher. That link points at the right edition and the right file. If you do search manually, compare the full pack name from the panel word by word — the part after the colon is what matters.
The server cannot be reached
Check the server status first. A sleeping or newly installed server needs a short time to wake or complete its first start. Wait for Online, copy the address again and check whether an allowlist is enabled. A version error and a connection error are different: a version error proves that you already reached the server but used the wrong client profile.
After a modpack update
Updates often change mods, configuration and sometimes Minecraft or the loader. Do not update only the server. Reopen the connection card and share its new client version with every player. Old profiles cannot be expected to join after the server update.
FAQ
Can I use “Latest Release” in the Minecraft Launcher?
Not for a regular client modpack. “Latest Release” launches vanilla Minecraft without the pack and its loader. Only packs explicitly marked as server-side allow the regular client.
Do I need to install NeoForge or Fabric separately?
No. Installing and launching the pack through CurseForge or Modrinth configures the matching loader automatically.
Why does the server use a different CurseForge file?
Many CurseForge projects publish two related files: a client release for players and a separate server pack for the host. Your panel deliberately shows the client version you need in the launcher, not the internal server archive.
I installed the pack with the right name and still cannot join
Then it is most likely the wrong edition of the same series. “All the Mods 10” and “All the Mods 10: To the Sky” are two separate packs with different mods. If the error lists channels that are missing on the server side but required on the client, this is exactly that case. Open the pack through the button on your connection card — it always points at the right edition.
Can a friend join with another pack version?
It may appear to work for a small update, but it is not reliable. One different mod can reject the join or later cause missing blocks and damaged world data. Always use the exact same release.
