In the GSH panel, you can choose an available custom subdomain for your game server. Check the allowed name format, wait for the availability message, and test the saved address. DNS propagation and server reachability are separate processes; a new name does not fix a wrong port.
Where to change the address
Open your server in the customer area. At the very top of the server page you will see the name and description, and below them the current connection address with the Copy button. Right next to the address there is a pencil icon labeled Change subdomain. If your server does not have a subdomain yet, it says No subdomain assigned and shows the Choose subdomain button.
If your server still uses the automatically assigned name, the panel also displays a notice Make your server address more personal. Via Change connect name you end up in the same input field. You can dismiss the notice permanently if you want to keep the name.
Entering a name
Click the pencil and type your desired name into the field. The following fixed rules apply to the subdomain:
- at least 3 and at most 30 characters,
- only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens,
- the start and end must be a letter or a number.
You don't have to avoid uppercase letters: the panel automatically converts your input to lowercase and removes spaces at the edges. Umlauts, underscores, and dots, however, are not allowed; so write mueller-server, for example, instead of "Müller_Server".
The availability check
As soon as you have entered three characters, the panel checks live whether the name is free. You get one of three responses:
- is available! together with the full address under which your server will be reachable afterwards,
- This subdomain is already taken. if another server uses the name,
- a format error if the name violates the rules above.
Some names are blocked in general because we need them ourselves for services, for example www, admin, panel, or status. They also appear as taken in the check. In that case, try a variant with an addition, such as status-craft.
Saving and using the new address
If the name is available, click Save. The panel confirms the change and notes that DNS propagation takes about one to five minutes. During this time, the new address may not yet resolve for some players. Restarting the game or a few minutes of patience usually solves this.
The address you get with Copy contains your server's port. This way it works in every game. For Minecraft Java, TeamSpeak, and Mumble, the address without a port also works, because the client finds the port itself via DNS. If your Minecraft server runs with crossplay, the panel additionally shows a separate line below it for Console / Mobile (Bedrock) with the address and port for Bedrock players.
Share the new address with your fellow players before you play next, and update it in server lists or on your Discord.
If it doesn't work
- The button is missing or saving is rejected: For Among Us, the address is fixed because the game connects via its own custom region URL; it cannot be changed there.
- You are a co-manager and not the owner of the server: You may then lack the permission for the address. The owner can grant it to you in the user management.
- The message "The address has changed in the meantime": Someone else changed the address at the same time. Simply check your desired name again.
Before you tackle bigger changes to the server, a fresh backup is worthwhile; how to do that is explained in Create and restore a server backup. And if you want to switch server software or game version, Switch server software and version will help you.
Testing the new address without unnecessary server changes
After saving, copy the fully displayed address and test it in the appropriate game client. If there is an error, compare it with your previous direct connection details. If the IP and port work but the domain does not yet, check DNS propagation and local caching instead of changing the world or server software. For games with a separate port field, share the address and port separately. Only update Discord, server lists, and your group's saved entries after a successful test. A supposedly free name must also be saved successfully; the live check alone is not yet a final change.
