Ready-to-launch Minecraft server

Create a Better MC Server

Better MC is available in several editions and versions. The direct setup starts with Forge, matching the verified pack Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 (Minecraft 1.20.1); compare it with the loader required by your chosen pack before ordering.

Choose the Better MC edition before installing

A Better Minecraft server needs the exact Better MC project and pack release. Its game version, loader and server files must match. Better Minecraft is not one interchangeable download: BMC4 and BMC5 use different foundations and should not be treated as consecutive release numbers of the same installation.

The Forge starting selection on this page suits the BMC4 route described here. Check the loader before ordering if you want another edition. The separate Better MC pack page, where offered, focuses on its particular pack; this guide covers choosing and installing a compatible edition and maintaining the world afterwards.

Agree on edition, pack release and client profile as a group. Use the matching server installation and verify a fresh test world or a backed-up copy before importing important progress. A loader preset is a starting software choice, not evidence that the complete pack is already installed.

Distinguish BMC4 from BMC5

The official projects identify BMC4 as a Forge pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 and BMC5 as a NeoForge pack for Minecraft 1.21.1. Still check the actual release file before installing. That file's requirements determine the specific configuration; a project image or an older video is not the release record.

Pack family Documented game foundation Loader Installation choice
Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge Matching BMC4 client and server release
Better MC [NEOFORGE] BMC5 Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge Matching BMC5 client and server release
Another or older Better MC project Its own file requirements Its own file requirements Investigate separately; do not mix family files

These foundations are documented by the BMC4 project and the BMC5 project. The family label does not replace choosing an exact published release within it.

Switching the dashboard loader does not turn a BMC4 world into a BMC5 world. Mods, generated terrain and stored data may differ. Treat a family change as a separate investigated migration. For an ordinary import, first reproduce the previously working pack unchanged.

Write a version record everyone can use

Record the full project name, pack release, Minecraft version, loader version and Java runtime required by its server installation. Include the source of the files. Players use this record to choose the correct launcher profile, and an administrator uses it to reproduce the server during recovery.

Compare more than the displayed base game version. Two Minecraft 1.20.1 clients can run different BMC4 releases or different additional files. Even the same family name is insufficient when registries or dependencies have changed. The precise pack state often explains a join rejection that looks mysterious when only Minecraft versions are compared.

Decide whether the world is new or imported. A new project can start with a clean test world. An import needs the original world, configuration and software state preserved. Plan an upgrade after the original installation works at the destination, so the two changes have separate checks.

Keep the record and original downloads with backups. The pack we used last week is not a reproducible identifier. A named release prevents a supposed repair from silently becoming a different mod combination and makes support information considerably more useful.

Download the server installation and client pack separately

Players install the appropriate client pack into a dedicated launcher profile. The dedicated server uses the matching server files or documented installer. The client's complete directory may contain components that should not execute on a dedicated server.

Find the server installation belonging to the selected release. Compare its name and identifier with the client pack. An archive for a neighbouring release is not a dependable substitute. Use BMC4's official file list, or the BMC5 project's own file selection for that family.

Server files may include configuration, scripts and datapacks as well as mods. These can affect recipes and behaviour. Transferring only visible JARs may create a different experience even when the process starts. Preserve the documented directory layout.

If the offered modpack browser has the intended release, check its actual selection before installing. Automated setup is appropriate for combinations it really offers; it is not a reason to assume an unavailable release will be equivalent. Plain Forge alone does not constitute an installed Better MC pack.

Plan resources for exploration and shared bases

Better MC expands terrain and game content. Demand depends on release, concurrent players, active view areas and how many directions the group explores at once. One general memory guarantee for all Better MC editions would be misleading.

Use the selected release's requirements and the recommendation for the offered server configuration as a starting point. Consider the client separately: local graphics, shaders and pack processing run on player devices. Extra server memory does not automatically fix one person's low frame rate.

Activity What to observe
Players explore different directions New chunk generation and simultaneous active areas
Large shared base Entities, memory use and active mechanics
Visiting another dimension Additional generation and dimension activity
One client stutters Graphics settings and actual launcher profile
Everyone sees delayed interactions Server processing and corresponding console messages

Begin with moderate view and simulation distances. Compare the same session before and after one change. If generation is the bottleneck, a larger memory number alone does not establish improved tick performance. Choose resources based on observed activity and supported pack requirements.

Step 1: Create the correct server foundation

Select Minecraft Java and the loader required by the chosen family. For BMC4, match the required Forge and game versions; for BMC5, match the NeoForge and game requirements. Check the actual selection before creating the server rather than relying on the page preset.

  1. Compare the configuration against your version record.
  2. Create the server and open its dashboard.
  3. Perform the initial foundation start where the installation workflow supports it.
  4. Check the reported software and runtime versions.
  5. Stop completely before uploading or replacing pack files.

If the foundation fails, inspect Java runtime and startup configuration. Arguments copied from an old tutorial are not automatically appropriate for this release or hosting environment. Use the provided installation and startup method.

For an import, retain the original pack edition instead of changing families at the same time. A verified foundation followed by an import of the same release helps identify the source of a failure. For a new project, keep the first world disposable until the pack and clients pass their checks.

Step 2: Install the pack and inspect directories

With an offered installer, choose the exact release and review its details. For manual installation, use the corresponding server package. Extract so the intended directories are in the active server installation rather than hidden inside another archive parent folder.

Check that mods and necessary configuration are at the expected paths before starting. Avoid carrying leftovers from another family into a clean installation. Back up existing data before reinstallation and follow the documented cleaning or update method.

Do not replace JARs while the game process is running. Stop deliberately, install the changes and restart. If the package requires an installer, resolve a failed installation or download step first; world startup cannot skip missing components.

Read the console through completion. Initialisation can take longer than an ordinary Vanilla start. Repeatedly restarting during this phase is unhelpful. If the process exits, record the first specific error and the exact pack, loader and runtime combination that produced it.

Step 3: Prepare the matching client profile

Each player installs the same Better MC family and release as the server. Use a separate profile so changes to another project do not alter this installation unintentionally. Launch that profile and check the reported version rather than assuming the last launcher selection remained active.

In Java Edition, open Multiplayer and add the dashboard game address. Retain any explicitly supplied port. The address is not the dashboard link and does not include https://. A normal Bedrock client on a phone or console does not replace the required Java pack client.

Begin with an unchanged official client pack and no optional personal additions. Once login works, test optional components individually. If only one player fails, compare their launched profile with a working one before reinstalling the whole server.

Test a meaningful pack function, a reconnect and a short exploration. Arriving at spawn does not establish that inventories and additional dimensions work. For private play, then activate the appropriate whitelist and limit administrative privileges to people who need them.

Verify the first shared sessions

Start in a manageable area and check that everyone remains connected. Newly generated terrain imposes different work from an established base. Note specific slow situations rather than responding to every brief delay with a restart.

Test the functions you intend to use: pack items, recipes, inventories, structures and relevant dimensions. Available content depends on the release. A video about another Better MC edition does not necessarily describe your installation.

For a useful resource comparison, have the intended group play simultaneously. Observe both normal base activity and exploration. An empty world immediately after startup only establishes limited conditions and cannot demonstrate later group capacity.

Finish with a controlled restart and inspect the same saved progress. Take an initial backup of this functioning baseline. If custom additions later cause a problem, you have a clearly identified state to compare rather than several undocumented partially changed installations.

Import an existing Better MC world

Use its original family and release first. Back up the complete source installation. Relevant data may include additional dimensions, player files and necessary configuration beyond the main world directory. Record which paths belong to the saved state.

Stop the destination before replacing files. Check its active world path and the archive layout. If a new landscape appears, the import may be nested incorrectly or a different world name may be selected. Keep the original copy while investigating.

Inspect known buildings, inventories, mod items and every dimension your group uses. Include a player whose saved progress should remain intact. Correct terrain at spawn does not establish that all player and dimension data came across.

A newer world or one modified by another pack is not a dependable downgrade candidate. Restore the earlier matching backup for a return to the prior state. Ensure retention does not immediately replace your last good backup with the failed import, especially before the group has inspected its saved progress.

Solve startup and login failures with exact comparisons

For Better MC, the complete pack state is the main comparison. Check family and release before the base game, loader, Java and custom files. A registry rejection and an unknown hostname indicate different prerequisites.

Failure First check Next action
BMC4 client against BMC5 server Different families Choose one matching family
Same game version but login rejected Pack release or additional files Compare exact client state
Missing library at startup Incomplete server installation Restore required matching files
Client-class failure Client-only server component Check server archive and environment
Class-version error Incompatible Java runtime Use the release's documented runtime
Memory-related termination Allocation and installation state Inspect the error and release requirements
New world after import Active world path and layout Correct selection while preserving originals
Only one friend fails Profile, account or copied address Compare with a working client

Find the first meaningful cause in the log. The final line often only reports termination. If a custom mod caused the failure, compare the previously working state. Do not remove content mods from your only important world and continue opening it experimentally.

When sharing errors, include pack name, release, loader and the last change. Remove credentials from logs. A screenshot without versions can show the symptom, but does not establish which installation the repair must target.

Improve performance without experimenting on the only world copy

Separate memory pressure, server tick processing, connection latency and client rendering. If one player struggles with shaders, begin with that player's client. If everyone experiences delayed block actions together, inspect the server during that activity.

Reduce excessive view or simulation distance and reproduce the same test. Compare exploration against known terrain when new generation appears responsible. Review deliberately loaded regions, entities and active mechanics before assuming player count is the only source of demand.

Check additional performance mods for loader, release and pack compatibility. Performance in a project's name does not mean it belongs in every Better MC edition. Dependencies and overlapping behaviour can alter a pack whose components were already coordinated by its author.

Use a compatible profiler for detailed diagnosis and record the actual problematic session. Note the conditions so another measurement is comparable. Then decide whether resources are inadequate or a particular setting or component should change. Do not change several variables and lose the baseline.

Coordinate pack updates and recovery

Read the target release's upgrade notes. Save the world, software, configuration and startup selection of the current state. Stop and update through the supported workflow. Account for removed files; copying new files on top can retain old incompatible components.

After updating, test startup, two matching clients, buildings, inventories and used dimensions. Share the exact new release with the group after these checks. Everyone should switch to that verified state instead of joining with several different releases during testing.

Recovery uses the complete old software and the pre-update backup. A changed world is not reliably converted back by selecting an earlier version in the dashboard. Keep several clearly named backups and verify a restored state through actual play and a restart.

BMC4 to BMC5 also changes family and foundation. Do not assume a lossless in-place switch. Investigate any potential transfer with copies and preserve the group's original functioning state. A new family may be a new project rather than an ordinary release update of the current world.

Final checks and official pack sources

You are ready when family and release are recorded, two matching clients enter and a restart returns to the expected world. For an import, confirm saved player and dimension data. Verify the backup before many more hours of progress depend on it.

Choose the configuration required by your actual edition. Forge is the starting option for the BMC4 route here. Another Better MC project must determine its own requirements before you create or change the server.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does Better MC need?

It depends on the pack version and player count. Large packs need considerably more RAM than vanilla; follow the recommendation in the configurator.

Can I change versions later?

Yes. Create a complete backup first and verify that the existing world is compatible with the new version.
