Frequently asked questions
How many players can join?
Barotrauma supports up to 16 players in a crew. For a stable session we recommend 2–4 GB RAM depending on submarine size and mod count.
Are Steam Workshop mods supported?
Yes, Steam Workshop mods are fully supported. You can install custom submarines, gamemodes, and content packs via Workshop IDs in the server config.
Can I use custom-built submarines?
Yes! Submarines built in the Submarine Editor can be uploaded to the server. Players can then select them in the game lobby for their next mission.
What gamemodes are available?
Barotrauma offers Campaign mode (persistent story with crew progression and an evolving world) and Sandbox mode (free play for building, experimenting, and custom scenarios). Both are configurable in the dashboard.
How do I get started after ordering?
Typical initial setup: about 3 minutes. Queues or large installations can take longer. Set the server name, password, and max players in the control panel. Upload custom submarines via the file manager. Players connect via IP and port.
Can I play Barotrauma with friends from different countries?
Yes, a dedicated server makes this straightforward. Unlike host-via-Steam, no single home upload connection limits the quality for other crew members. Our data centre provides stable latencies for all players — whether connecting from Germany, Austria, or anywhere else in Europe.
Do I get my own subdomain?
Yes. Every server includes a subdomain like my-server.game-serverhosting.com, and you can change it anytime in the dashboard.
What are the free extras?
Every server can enable free add-ons such as Uptime Kuma, Sinusbot, Game Server Watcher, and more with one click in the dashboard.
How quickly is my server online?
Typical initial setup: about 3 minutes. Queues or large installations can take longer.
Is there a minimum contract term?
There is no long-term minimum. Billing is a monthly subscription and automatic renewal can be disabled. Longer terms may qualify for discounts.
Are the servers located in Germany?
Yes. All game servers run in German data centres (Falkenstein and Limburg) connected to the major German exchanges — low pings for players across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and solid latency for the rest of Europe.
Which provider is best for my server?
The best provider is the one that shows you what you get before you pay: RAM, slots, location, price and cancellation terms. Here the price and resources are visible in the configurator before checkout, there is no minimum term and setup is automated — feel free to compare that with other offers.
Should I host the server myself or rent one?
Self-hosting costs power, time and a machine that runs around the clock; port forwarding, updates and backups are on you. A rented server is online within minutes, keeps running when your PC is off, and updates, DDoS protection and backups are included. For one or two friends on a single evening self-hosting is often fine — for a persistent world, renting pays off.
