Update 14 launches on August 6
Strange Loop Games is releasing Update 14 “Garbage & Recycling” for Eco on August 6, 2026. The focus is a new pollution mechanic: trash and environmental impact will have measurable effects on your world in the future — and therefore directly on how your community lives together on the server.
What changes: pollution becomes visible
Eco has always been a game about consequences — every tree felled and every mine changes the ecosystem. Update 14 takes that idea further and turns ground pollution into its own factor.
The most tangible effect concerns housing: according to the developers, houses in polluted areas receive a significantly worse Housing Score. On the official test server, the affected zones could be marked across large areas of the map by the end of the playtest. For your group, that means: where industry is located, living there becomes unattractive — city planning, recycling, and location choices gain real weight.
The developers explicitly state that the release notes on August 6 will include a full breakdown of the new pollution mechanic, including specific guidance on how to keep the effects low in-game. These notes are the most important source for server owners on release day — we recommend reading them before updating your world.
What you should do beforehand as a server owner
The announcement does not say whether existing worlds will continue running with Update 14 or whether a world restart will be required. As long as that remains open, the usual approach for a major update applies:
- Create a backup before installing the update. In your game-serverhosting panel, you can create a backup of your current world at any time.
- Read the release notes on August 6 — they will say whether your world remains compatible.
- Warn your community in advance if a world restart is coming. In Eco, a wipe hits an established economy especially hard: professions, laws, and trade chains are the result of many hours of play.
- Wait with the update until you have checked both. An Eco server that switches a week later loses nothing — a world that is unexpectedly reset does.

Pollution is also a government issue
Eco handles environmental questions not only through simulation, but also politically: your community can pass laws that limit emissions, regulate landfills, or reward recycling. With a dedicated pollution mechanic, this part of the game gets new substance — Update 14 is likely to lead to the first real environmental laws on many servers.

Häufige Fragen
Does my world need to be reset? The announcement does not say. The release notes on August 6 will clarify it — read them before you update, and create a backup first.
When can I install Update 14 on my server? As soon as Strange Loop Games has released the new server version. At game-serverhosting, you update your Eco server through the panel.
Do I need more RAM for Update 14? There is no information on that yet. Our recommendation for Eco remains 8 GB for around 20 concurrent players for now; if that is not enough, you can upgrade at any time.
What happens to my buildings in polluted areas? So far, the known effect is on the Housing Score: residential buildings in polluted zones are rated worse. The release notes will provide further details.
