"Latest" is the most recent published build for a Minecraft branch. "Recommended" is the more conservative choice highlighted by Forge. Here too, the global Maven field release can point to a different Minecraft version because of parallel maintenance branches. Minecraft 26.x requires Java 25; mods must match the Minecraft and Forge branch exactly.
Which Version Should You Use?
