As of: September 16, 2026. Mojang released Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 "Wilderness Bound" on September 15, 2026: the Dappled Forest with poplar trees, red shrubs and tree fungi, wool and concrete stairs including slabs, straw beds, cushions, and the abandoned camp. For servers, 26.2 "Chaos Cubed" remains the stable standard of this hub: as of the check date, Paper only has ALPHA builds for 26.3 (Build 5), NeoForge is at 26.3.0.1-beta, Forge has no 26.3 branch, and Fabric API 0.160.5+26.3 is available. Snapshots and previews are test versions and can damage worlds; Mojang recommends backups and a separate installation folder for them.

What's New in Minecraft Java 26.2?
26.2 brings, among other things, sulfur caves, the Sulfur Cube, and the materials sulfur and cinnabar. It also adds a friends list and an experimental Vulkan renderer. "Experimental" means this rendering option should first be tested outside of an important production setup. For a server switch, it's crucial that not only the vanilla server starts, but that the loader you use, as well as plugins, mods, and proxy components, are explicitly compatible with the target version.
How Should You Classify 26.3?
The official version manifest has listed 26.3 under release since September 15. A vanilla server can switch over directly. Plugin and mod servers should wait until their loader has a stable release: Paper 26.3 is at ALPHA, NeoForge is at 26.3.0.1-beta, and Forge doesn't have one yet. Test mods, data packs, and server builds separately on a copy of your world. You shouldn't keep using a world that has already been saved with 26.3 on 26.2; to roll back, restore the previous backup.
Why Isn't the Version Called 1.22?
Starting in 2026, Mojang switched the numbering system to year-based numbers: releases begin with 26, followed by the drop number. That's why a prediction of "Minecraft 1.22" points in the wrong direction. The earlier version also needs to be named correctly: Java 1.21.5 was called Spring to Life, not "The Garden Awakens".
Safely Updating Your Minecraft Server
- Create a complete backup of your world, configuration, and extensions.
- Check the release status of your server build, loader, proxy, plugins, and mods.
- Test the update first on a copy, and never with your only world file.
- Check the startup log, player login, world loading, permissions, and core game functions.
- Keep the previous server version and backup ready for a rollback.
