Checked on September 23, 2026. Valheim 1.0 was released on September 9th and has left early access. Since then, Iron Gate has pushed out several patches, most recently 1.0.15 on September 18th. For server operators, three points are especially important: bans and whitelist accept old Steam IDs again, a bug with duplicate terrain and performance loss has been fixed, and items on weapon and armor stands may have lost their level when switching to the new save format. The official 1.0 patch notes confirm the new Deep North biome, and Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ answers questions about worlds, mods, crossplay, and player count.
Patches after release: 1.0.10 to 1.0.15
Iron Gate rolls out patches to the platforms with a delay; according to the studio, crossplay should still remain functional. Keep the dedicated server on the same version as the Steam clients and check the version display after every update.
| Patch | Date | What matters for your server |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0.10 | 09/11/2026 | Heavy Deep North armor can be repaired, Greydwarf shamans in the Deep North deal correct damage, new sound effects |
| 1.0.12 | 09/11/2026 (Steam first) | Bans and whitelist work again with old IDs like Steam_123456789, not just new V_… IDs. Crash when entering unloaded zones fixed. Items on stands no longer lose their level in worlds that haven't been loaded under 1.0 yet |
| 1.0.14 | 09/17/2026 | Characters now save correctly again when manually saving on a foreign server. Biome data caching has been disabled because an invalid cache could prevent joining remote servers. Terrain changes in multiplayer no longer cause performance and portal issues |
| 1.0.15 | 09/18/2026 | Fixes duplicate terrain with performance loss; visible seams disappear when you edit the terrain at that spot or walk through snow. Higher drop chance for Deep North armor variants, more Writhan spawns |
Level loss on stands: If a world was converted to the 1.0 save format before patch 1.0.12, items on weapon and armor stands may have lost their level and variant. This data was lost during the conversion. Iron Gate names two options: restore the world from the backup that was created the first time it loaded in the new format (progress made after that will be lost), or open a copy of that backup, carry the affected items over with your character, and replace them in the main world. So don't delete any automatically created world backups from the transition before you've checked the stands.
Items marked as "cheated": A bug marked some loot as cheated. Iron Gate has announced a cross-platform fix for this; affected items remain normally usable until then. The console function for persistent events (pevents) has only been available with devcommands enabled since 1.0.14.
What Valheim 1.0 brings
Alongside Deep North, Iron Gate lists new enemies, weapons, armor, building materials, crafting content, events, and achievements. The patch notes also include improvements to graphics options, menus, and save processes. The full list may contain spoilers; for technical server planning, the confirmed key points are enough for now. The game is still designed for 1 to 10 players. A higher RAM allocation doesn't lift this limit. Actual server load depends mainly on world size, builds, activities, and any mods used.
| Question | Status after release | Consequence for your server |
|---|---|---|
| New world needed? | No, old saves remain usable | Back up and keep using the old world, or start fresh intentionally |
| Deep North in old world? | New areas generate correctly in unexplored regions | Consider existing exploration in the north |
| Mods officially supported? | No | Check compatibility per mod and test vanilla as a reference |
| Cross-platform play? | Yes, with active crossplay backend | Test the join code and actual target platforms |
Existing world or fresh start?
You don't have to delete your old world for 1.0. According to the FAQ, save files remain intact and playable. However, new biome terrain only generates correctly in areas not yet explored. If your group has already explored the north of your existing world extensively, a new world could offer the fuller Deep North experience. Iron Gate recommends a fresh start for the full game experience anyway, but doesn't make it a technical requirement.
Keep the old world if builds and shared progress take priority. Start a second world as a test if you want to see the new progression. Decide this with your group before anyone overwrites files. The guide to the Valheim 1.0 server update explains which world files and settings you should back up together and how to narrow down an error after the update.
Safely updating your server to 1.0
- Stop the server and back up world files, configuration, and the mod list. Keep a second copy outside the server.
- Note the world name and check that the associated
.dband.fwlfiles are present. A different-worldvalue could otherwise load an empty world. - Update the server and clients via the intended version paths. After starting, check the console and the world that's actually loaded.
- Test joining with a current client. Check a known base, inventory, and a save process after the restart.
- If mods are installed and you run into problems, test without them first. Only enable versions whose authors confirm compatibility with 1.0, and check them individually.
- If you use crossplay, also test the join code with the platforms your group actually uses.
The server status in the dashboard alone doesn't prove that the right world has loaded or that every player can connect. Keep a record of the backup time, game version, and test result. In case of an error, you can then return specifically to the saved world and configuration. The official dedicated server guide describes the parameters for world, port, password, save path, and crossplay backend.
Mods and crossplay: limits after release
Valheim still offers no official mod support. The FAQ therefore promises no guarantee that existing mods will work under 1.0. A package list on Thunderstore is no proof that a specific package works on your server version. Check BepInEx, dependencies, and client mods together; if crashes occur, a vanilla start is the first comparison to make. For consoles, Valheim doesn't offer mods at the 1.0 launch. A mixed PC/console group should therefore initially play without client-required mods.
Crossplay connects the supported platforms to the same server world when the crossplay backend is active. However, it doesn't automatically sync all personal save data between platforms. For mixed groups, a current join code, a matching password, and a practical join test matter more than mere visibility in the server list. The individual steps are covered in the Valheim 1.0 crossplay guide.
FAQ
Has Valheim 1.0 already been released?
Yes. Iron Gate released the version on September 9, 2026. Deep North is part of this release, not just an announced test version.
Do I need to create a new world for Deep North?
No. Old worlds remain usable. However, for correctly generated new biome areas, the affected region must have been unexplored beforehand. For the fullest experience, Iron Gate recommends a fresh start.
Will my existing mods work after the update?
That's not guaranteed. Valheim has no official mod support. Back up the world, check the mod authors' notes, and if you run into problems, test the server world without mods first.
How many players fit on a Valheim 1.0 server?
According to the official FAQ, Valheim is still designed for 1 to 10 players. Choose your package size based on actual load, not a fictional unlock of additional slots.
Can PC and consoles play together on the server?
Yes, if crossplay is active on the dedicated server and players use current, compatible clients. Check the join code and test joining with the affected platforms.
Why can't a player with an old Steam ID join despite being whitelisted?
Up to patch 1.0.12, bans and whitelist only recognized the new IDs in the format V_…. Since 1.0.12, old entries like Steam_123456789 work again too. Update the dedicated server and check the list again afterward.
