Sodium belongs in your Minecraft client. The mod changes rendering and can therefore improve low frame rates or unstable visual output. It does not fix slow server ticks. Before you install anything, distinguish between a problem on your computer and delays that several players experience at the same time.
First classify the symptom
If mainly your own view stutters when turning the camera, start with the client, graphics settings, and mod conflicts. If blocks, creatures, or inventories respond with a delay for several players at the same time, also investigate the server. High ping can also cause delayed actions even when the frame rate is good.
Write down a reproducible situation: the same world position, viewing direction, and game conditions that are as similar as possible. That way, you compare the same scene afterward and not two randomly different locations with different performance demands.
Choose the right file
First check the game version and loader used in your Minecraft instance. Download Sodium only through the releases linked by the project. Choose the file for exactly this combination. A newly released file for an older Minecraft version is not automatically the right update for your current instance.
The project page lists Fabric and NeoForge as supported loaders. That does not mean that every single file supports both loaders or all Minecraft versions. The details of the specific download remain decisive.
Test the installation in a controlled way
- Back up your client instance or create a copy in the launcher you use.
- Fully close Minecraft.
- Install the matching Sodium file in this client instance. For a ready-made modpack, first check whether Sodium is already included.
- Start the same Minecraft version with the same loader.
- Open your comparison scene and check frame rate, visual glitches, and stability.
- Then test joining your usual server.
Do not change render distance, shaders, and several other mods at the same time for this comparison. Otherwise, you cannot assign an improvement or an error to any specific change. A guaranteed FPS increase cannot be inferred from the installation alone.
What you need to change on the dedicated server
No server update is required for Sodium alone. Do not upload the client mod to the server mod directory to increase TPS. If your modpack requires additional mods on both sides, its complete version set still applies. Sodium replaces neither required gameplay mods nor their dependencies.

If Minecraft crashes after installation
First restore the client instance you backed up earlier or remove the most recently added mod from the test instance. Check the Minecraft version, loader, the first error message, and other graphics mods. Do not change the server as long as the error already occurs in the client before joining.

Do all other players need Sodium? For Sodium alone, you do not need to distribute a shared server installation. Everyone checks the file that fits their own client instance.
Does Sodium replace a TPS fix? No. Smooth visual output and server actions processed on time are different things to check.
Should I use the newest file? Only if it matches the Minecraft version and loader of your instance.
